SINGING sensation Joe McElderry was flying high after a surprise gig last night.

The 19-year-old X Factor winner performed at a private bash at the Hilton Hotel in Gateshead to mark Newcastle International Airport’s 75th anniversary.

The South Shields pop star belted out Don’t Stop Believin’, The Climb, No Regrets and Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me, to the invited audience.

Graeme Mason, the planning and corporate affairs director at Newcastle International, said of the airport’s 75th anniversary gala dinner: “We are delighted our guests enjoyed the event.

“A huge amount of effort was put in by a lot of people, and to see the event come off so well is extremely pleasing.

“We’d like to thank the Hilton Hotel in Gateshead, the evening’s entertainers, and everybody involved.” Joe’s airport appearance comes days after he got lost in Bulgaria while out training for this Sunday’s Great North Run.

Joe, from Westoe, decided to go for a jog before filming started on his new single Somebody – but he took a wrong turn.

He told The Sun: “I decided I’d go for a run before rehearsals.

“But suddenly I realised I didn’t recognise anything around me.

“I turned around and tried to retrace my tracks, but I ended up next to a motorway.

“I had no idea where I was – all the road signs were foreign.”

Thankfully, a kind taxi driver took him back to his hotel.

Joe can now concentrate on raising £5,000 for the Teenage Cancer Trust in this weekend’s gruelling half marathon, which finishes in his home town.
