May 12
A plane crashed in Tripoli, 104 people died, 70 of them were Dutch.

There was only 1 survivor, Ruben, a 9 year old dutch boy.
Seeing the remains of the crashed plane it is a complete miracle the boy could survive this.

He is in hospital, today his uncle and aunt, who flew in this night, could see him... he has broken many bones, but he is stable and was pleased to see his uncle...he even smiled.  Cry

How can anyone survive such a disaster...how can anyone cope with the loss of parents and brother...it is beyond my imagination.. all I can do is pray for the boy, even though i'm not religious

My heart goes out to all the surviving relatives... and especially to Ruben...

It is indeed sad that this one special boy, Ruben, escaped such an horrific air disaster and is, unfortunately, the sole survivor of such a fate.  My prayers also go out to him for his full recovery.  I cannot imagine what people go through when an aircraft is about to crash, it unnerves me to think about it.  I always feel in these situations that there is always a reason why one person is chosen to survive by God, for some inexplicable purpose, in this life - this is my belief.  I still always ask myself why though, when everyone else on the flight perished - he must have a purpose for being and what that purpose will be remains to be seen.   Cry

I am glad that our foreign affairs took care of Ruben's privacy and banned all those journalists and tv camera's out of his hospital (!) room.

I do realise he is the 'face' of this disaster, but the boy needs his privacy... Cry

I have been very upset by this plane crash.. and especially Ruben has been on my mind almost constantly.

Friday one of the biggest papers in Holland "de Telegraaf" published an "interview" with Ruben, one of their so called journalists, managed to get through to one of his doctors of the hospital in Tripoli/Libia and that doctor gave his phone to Ruben.  Mind you that was only a day later and Ruben was not told then what had happened to him...and that his parents and brother were killed at the crash.

I have no words for journalists like this and I promised myself I will never buy or read that paper again. A lot of other media like tv shows and stuff think the same and many of them are talking about a boycot. We dutch should all boycot that paper.

Update on Ruben:
He is home, he left Tripoli in a special ambulance plane, and his departure was filmed; clips of that were also shown around the world. his aunt and uncle were with him.
He landed saturday morning and he has been taking to a dutch hospital. His coming home was NOT filmed.. it is NOT known which hospital he has been taken to...and that is a good thing, the boy needs his life back.. if possible.

That is absolutely disgraceful, people definately should boycot this paper, some journalists are just so low, there isn't anything they wouldn't do for a story, it is disgusting.  Cry

Well I am glad Ruben is now home and hopefully bearing up.  Thanks for the update Taco.  Cry
